It’s time once again to “spring forward“. The phrase “spring forward or “fall back” is a helpful reminder of how to adjust for daylight saving time.

Spring Forward: The clocks are set ahead one hour during Spring Forward.  Spring Forward 2012 occurs on Sunday, March 11.

Fall Back: The clocks are set back one hour during Fall Back. Fall Back 2012 occurs on Sunday, November 4.

Spring Forward 2012 – When Do We Change Clocks

Spring forward 2012 starts at 2 a.m on Sunday morning, March 11 and will end on the first Sunday of November ( November 4th). On March 11th at 2 a.m. you will need to change your clock forward one hour to 3 a.m.- This means you will lose an hour of your weekend.

The main benefit of Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight. We spring forward to increase day light hours in the afternoon while decreasing the hours of daylight in the morning.

If you live in Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands – you don’t have to spring forward because they do not observe daylight saving time.

A lot of countries do not participate in the day light saving 2012 time changes. There are around 75 countries that observe day light saving time and 164 countries that do not, according to TimeandDate.com

Spring forward is an easy way to be reminded to check smoke detectors. Make it a habit to change the batteries in your smoke detector every “spring forward” or “fall back”.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Energizer battery company recommend that you adopt the life-saving habit of changing the batteries in your smoke detector when you change your clock.  Doing this will double your family’s chance of surviving a home fire.

Spring Forward 2012 – Daylight Saving Time History

Benjamin Franklin has been credited with the idea of daylight saving time, however, it was first introduced in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist. In 1905, William Willett introduced DST because he did not like how his afternoon golf round was cut short by early days. During 1916, Germany and its allies in WW1 were the first countries to adopt daylight savings time to ensure consistent railroad times and limit coal usage.

The U.S. used daylight saving time for a brief time during the War, but it didn’t become widely accepted in the States until after World War II.

In 1966, the Uniform Time Act  mandated that clocks should be set forward on the last Sunday in April and set back the last Sunday in October.

That law was amended in 1986 by Congress to start daylight saving time on the first Sunday in April, though the new system wasn’t implemented until 1987. The end date was not changed, however, and remained the last Sunday in October until 2006. This year, Spring Forward 2012 Day light Saving Time (DST), will run from March 11 until Nov. 4, 2012.
